Why Does Summer Even Exist?

It is almost the time of year where everyone is the most excited. Family vacations, school breaks, swimming, water parks, and much more fun is on its way. What time of year is it exactly? Summer time! But does anyone take the time to realize why summer actually exists?

The summer solstice, June 21, marks the first day of summer. Even though humidity levels and temperatures rise before then, it’s not officially “summer” until this day. It’s also important to note that this is summer for the northern hemisphere! The Earth is tilted, so at this time, it is the winter solstice for the southern hemisphere. According to weather.com, this day is where the sun is directly above the Tropic of Cancer. This is a line of latitude that is located at 23.5 degrees north of the equator. In simpler terms, it’s when the North Pole is tilted toward the sun.

The Earth spins on an axis that is tilted approximately 23.5 degrees from the Earth’s orbit around the sun. With this tilt, direct sunlight shifts between latitudinal lines. At this specific time, the northern hemisphere, this includes the middle and higher latitudes, experiences summer weather conditions. Conditions include higher humidity and temperatures and an overall drier climate.

A World Without Seasons

Since all four seasons exist because of the Earth’s tilted axis, what would happen if the Earth wasn’t tilted at all? According to livescience.com, the reason why it’s tilted to begin with is because of a Mars-size object that collided into Earth 4.5 billion years ago. It also created the moon when a chunk of Earth came off. Apparently, without any tilt, humanity would be destroyed and you can say goodbye to summer.

Without seasons, the world would have pretty much nothing. Everything we have no would cease to exist—even wheat. Earth would be stratified into climate bands with longer and progressively colder weather the farther Earth is away from the equator. Humans wouldn’t be able to survive such harsh weather conditions.

For those of you who “hate” summer’s hot weather, be careful of what you wish for! We could have freezing temperatures all year round. Relax, put on some sunscreen, and dive head-first into what summer offers!
